I would like to share with you how I started decorating cakes as it may be encouraging some of you to start doing that for your loved ones.
Since I had my kids I always really enjoyed choosing a birthday theme and making everything around it. From invitation and table decorations to the cake. I started out by buying cake decorating books and practicing. My first cake was for my son's baptism, 23 years ago. Everybody loved it and I got many compliments that I made me feel more confident to keep going. Then when they start kindergarden (in Argentina they start at 3 years old) I collaborated with every baking sale the school organized by making and decorating cakes. Soon I started getting orders for cakes from other moms, and I started a very small business. It was really nice to be a stay at home mom but be able to work at the same time. When the kids where a little older and they where more independent, I took some cake decorating courses. Sometimes I think how many beautiful things I could have made if at that moment I had had a computer and all the programs and apps that exist today. Everything was more time consuming because it was all done by hand. However, I still remember my kids' faces when they came back running from school, and they saw what I had made and how I had decorated everything to celebrate their birthdays. Today they are 26 and 23 and they remember that with a very wide smile.
Today I enjoy doing the same, with more technology, so other moms can also see the smiles on their kids' faces.

The baby of the house was turning 1. Mom contacted me to make the cake and other sweets. She told me that the little girl adores the bunnies she has on her favorite blanket, so mom though having them on the cake would be a good idea. She wanted something simple, not too much butter cream, for sure dulce de leche, meringues and a layer of puff pastry on the cake. Because I love to bake and decorate, I went further than that and I designed some accents to prepare a nice table such as the invitations, food trays, cupcake wraps, labels you can use however you want, bunny cookies, bunny tails (meringues), etc.
This is the picture to give you an idea what of you can do.
The printable is available to you for free.

In 2014, we are again at the Calgary Flamenco Festival ( http://www.calgaryflamencofestival.com/). The spectacular dancers will receive baskets and boxes of alfajores that we made specially for them. This year, on Friday September 26 we are also serving alfajores to the guests attending the festival, so they can test a glass of wine with the sweetness of these treats.
October and Thanksgiving are my favorite times of the year. While we don't celebrate it in Argentina I've come to love this holiday as much as the locals. It's a great time to stop and be grateful for everything we have in life instead of thinking about the things that we want in the future. At Coco Karamel we are getting ready for the season with an alternative to pumpkin pie: pumpkins in syrup.
Zapallos en almibar (click here for pronounciation) is the name in Spanish and it is a very common dessert in the north of Argentina. You can serve it with cheese, by itself with whipped cream, use it to decorate an angel cake, on top of ice cream and more. Your imagination is the limit.
This is a recipe my mom learned from her auntie Alice and grandma Vicenta. My dad is the biggest fan of Zappallos en almibar at home.
We also are making mini alfajores with color and fall designs. Could you imagine the kids faces if you have them as a surprise? Well... not only the kids.
I would like to share with you the new alfapop I was crafting. Which one is you favorite?
I made this base as well to present them on a sweet table or as a stand until you give them away!
On 9 of July Argentinean celebrate Independence Day. Coco Karamel wants to tells all of them around of the world and specially those living in Canada, "Happy Independence Day". The best way yo celebrate is with mate, Argentinean National Infusion, and alfajores the most traditional Argentinean cookies.
